FIVE DISASTROUS MISTAKES MADE BY UPSC ASPIRANTS
If you are a UPSC aspirant do read this, I am sure that nobody not even UPSC veterans and experience teachers too will hardly tell you these DISASTROUS MISTAKES which can cost you your dream job.
I have spent 7 years understanding UPSC CSE and have given four mains and two interview in five attempts. I prepared on my own from Mumbai and so I understand the importance of guidance needed for UPSC aspirants.
FIVE DISASTROUS MISTAKES
Fourthly, If your handwriting is untidy, Please improve, Especially alphabets like R, S, F, G, N need to be practiced extensively if you are unable to write them clearly while writing fast. Even if you loose half a mark in every answer , in roughly 120 total questions due to untidiness you will cumulatively loose 60-70 marks.
First, While giving Prelims its important to be calm and if you don’t know some answers, JUST TURN THE PAGE. A lot of people panic when they are unable to solve some questions on the first few page. Be calm, Your questions will come in the following pages. Anxiety while marking will lead to silly mistakes.
Also make sure that when you are marking a answer doubly check the question number and then only mark.
My friend lost out in prelims as he mis marked 3 questions in Paper 1 of prelims. This costed him 8 marks. How??? Do the calculation.
HE HAD TO WAIT FOR ONE LONG YEAR TO RECTIFY HIS MISTAKE.
Second, When examiner ask you to CHECK THE BOOKLET IN THE EXAM HALL, please do it religiously, One of the person in my circle paid heavily for not doing so. He started writing answers in mains as soon as he got the answer booklet. However due to his misfortune some papers of his booklet were stuck to each other and because he was busy writing he didn’t realise it, as he started answering 13th questions of GS 3 because papers were stuck he ended up finishing that answer on space provided for 15th question.

He lost 40 marks due to this unfortunate error, 20 for the 13th question and 20 for 15th question as the space was taken up by the answer. Imagine the mental stress, pain and time wasted and on top the impact that this mistake might have had on his other answers and papers.
I bet the cost was much higher than 40 marks.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR ANSWER BOOKLET AND QUESTION PAPER AT LEAST TWO TIMES.
Third, Switching Pens. Please decide the pen you will used for mains and stick to it. Every pen dimension is different and if you are not used to it your speed will get affected. Suppose you write 2 words less per minute due to change in pen, this will lead to writing 360 words less in three hours. This is almost equivalent to three answers. This 25-30 marks can cause huge pain later. Please avoid this.

YOU ARE OUT OF THE COMPETITION if you make this mistake. Please work on handwriting.
Fifthly, Doing hard work instead of smart work, For example- Optional Papers almost have similar questions every year, If one sit with the last five year papers one can clearly eliminate 20-30 percent of the syllabus. If you don't believe me see the past papers for yourself.
There are many more such smart strategies.
I am into UPSC for the past seven years, I have done some of these mistakes personally.
I wish I had someone who could tell me all these when I started my preparation way back in 2013.
Today I am a working professional with a MBA IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS DEGREE. I have been asked to teach at various institutes but that idea has not yet appealed to me.
However I wish to help aspirants with my knowledge.
